Statisticians have two different words for such values, the one they use depends on what the value ´is used for´.

If the purpose is

  • describing properties of a dataset, they use the term ´statistic´;
  • estimating parameters of the underlying probability distribution, they use the term ´estimator´.

And for ´true statisticians´ above 2 descriptions is blasfemous talk.

Statisticians don´t speak about datasets and properties but about samples, populations, functions, random variables, …

Contrary to widespread belief, statisticians are normal and fun people. They simply have a strong urge to be as clear and precise as possible (I´m not a statistician btw)😉
